Quick Answers

Am I eligible to apply?

Eligible candidates are early-career faculty from African universities, typically in science, engineering, and related technical fields. Most participants are within 5–7 years of completing their PhD.

Is the fellowship fully funded, and what exactly does it cover?

Yes. Travel and living stipends are fully supported and sponsored. The program covers your participation in a semester-long teaching residency at MIT, curriculum development workshops, instructional materials, and mentoring from MIT faculty.

How long is the residency, and do I need a leave of absence?

The core of the program is an intensive, semester-long residency at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Yes, your home university will need to commit to providing a paid leave of absence during your time in the program.

Does the program assist with US Visa sponsorship and housing?

Yes. Accepted fellows are sponsored for a J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa and receive guidance and support in securing accommodations near the MIT campus.

What is expected of me after I return to my home institution?

Fellows are expected to act as change agents in their home departments. Expectations include:

  • Redesigning existing courses or developing entirely new ones grounded in student-centered pedagogy and real-world problem-solving.
  • Implementing fresh teaching strategies learned during the MIT residency.
  • Training colleagues to cascade the ETT approach across your institution.
  • Joining and contributing to the AMTAUL network, which spans over 30 Nigerian universities.
