Fall 2011
Dr. Deborah Uzoamaka Ebem is a Senior Faculty member in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and has served as the Head of the Department of Computer Engineering at Veritas University, Abuja. A pioneer of the MIT-Empowering the Teachers program (Fall 2011 Cohort), she was part of the inaugural group that laid the foundation for the fellowship’s success in Nigeria. Her research is distinct for its focus on Perceptual Speech Quality in tonal languages. She specializes in analyzing how technology processes African languages (specifically Igbo) compared to English, working on “Masking Release” and speech intelligibility algorithms. Additionally, she was the IT Manager for the LIONGRID project, helping to design and implement the University of Nigeria’s first Grid Computing Infrastructure funded by UNESCO and HP. Dr. Ebem holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Ebonyi State University and a Master’s from Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), The Netherlands. Her background in high-performance computing allows her to bridge the gap between hardware infrastructure and software applications, particularly in the realm of Mobile Learning (m-learning) and educational games for Nigerian secondary schools. She is a Senior Member of the IEEE and a vocal advocate for gender inclusion in technology, serving as an active member of Nigerian Women in Information Technology (NIWIIT). Dr. Ebem continues to mentor young female scientists, pushing for the development of “home-grown” IT solutions that address local challenges in education and communication.
