Spring 2012

Dr. Abimbola Muhideen Jubril is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife. A Spring 2012 MIT-ETT Fellow, he is a specialist in Control Systems Engineering and Optimization, with a specific focus on applying advanced mathematical techniques to solve power system and healthcare challenges. His research is split into two high-impact areas. First, in Power Systems, he specializes in “Economic Dispatch” problems using Semi-Definite Programming (SDP) to optimize the operation of power plants, ensuring they generate electricity at the lowest possible cost while minimizing environmental emissions. Second, he is a lead researcher in the Ife Rehabilitation Robotics Research Group, where he designs low-cost robotic devices (such as hand orthoses) to assist stroke survivors in Nigeria, making neuro-rehabilitation accessible in resource-constrained settings. Dr. Jubril holds a Ph.D. in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from OAU. Following his fellowship at MIT, he became deeply involved in the iLab (Internet Laboratory) project, working to develop remote experimentation platforms that allow students to control physical hardware (like robotic arms) over the internet. He is a strong advocate for the use of “Home-Grown Technology” to solve local problems. His recent work includes the development of electronic travel aids for the visually impaired, designed specifically to detect the unique obstacles found on Nigerian roads (like open drains and potholes), moving beyond the limitations of standard western devices.
