Dr. Abubakar Idris Bashir

Bayero University Kano

Fall 2022

Dr. Abubakar Idris Bashir is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Bayero University, Kano (BUK). A Fall 2022 MIT-ETT Fellow, he is a specialist in Thermo-Fluids, Heat Transfer, and Energy Systems. His research is critical for improving the efficiency of industrial heat exchangers and thermal systems used in power generation and processing. His technical work focuses on “Transitional Flow Regimes”—the unstable phase where fluid flow shifts from smooth (laminar) to chaotic (turbulent). He has conducted extensive experimental investigations into Single-Phase Forced Convection in circular tubes, developing new correlations to predict heat transfer rates more accurately. This research is vital for designing safer and more efficient cooling systems for nuclear reactors and solar thermal plants. Dr. Bashir holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, and an M.Sc. from University College London (UCL). His academic background combines British theoretical rigor with South African experimental precision. Following his fellowship at MIT, Dr. Bashir has championed the “Lab-to-Market” approach at BUK. He is known for introducing Entrepreneurial Thinking into his engineering courses, challenging students to not just build prototypes but to develop business models for them. He actively supports student-led innovations, helping them navigate the early stages of product development within the university’s incubation ecosystem.
