Dr. Akinwumi Abimbola Amusan

University of Lagos

Spring 2022

Dr. Akinwumi Abimbola Amusan is a Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at the University of Lagos (UNILAG). A Spring 2022 MIT-ETT Fellow, he is a researcher in Microelectronics, Thin-Film Technology, and Material Characterization, bridging the gap between advanced semiconductor physics and practical device fabrication. His research focuses on the development of nano-scale electronic devices using Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD). He investigates the properties of thin films for use in sensors and energy-efficient electronics, a field he refined during his time at the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research in Dresden, Germany. His work contributes to the global effort to create smaller, faster, and more reliable electronic components. Dr. Amusan holds a Dr.-Ing. (Doctor of Engineering) from Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg, Germany, giving him a unique pedagogical perspective that blends German technical precision with the American innovation mindset he encountered at MIT. Since returning from his fellowship, Dr. Amusan has radically transformed his teaching methods at UNILAG. He has moved away from purely theoretical lectures to “Project-Based Learning,” supervising undergraduate teams that have built tangible products such as analog smart light switches, FM radio receivers for the campus station, and smart water-shower systems. He is a strong advocate for “Outcome-Based Assessments,” ensuring that students are graded on their ability to solve engineering problems rather than just rote memorization.
