Dr. Ameer Mohammed
Air Force Institute of Technology, Kaduna
Fall 2019
Dr. Ameer Mohammed is a faculty member at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) in Kaduna, Nigeria, where he leverages his engineering expertise to drive innovation within the military and beyond. As a Fall 2019 MIT-ETT fellow, he was inspired by MIT’s culture of self-belief and creativity, and he has brought that ethos back to Nigeria to spur problem-solving initiatives. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Mohammed led a team at AFIT in developing a locally-sourced emergency ventilator (the NAF E-Vent) by adapting MIT’s open-source design – his team built prototypes with in-house resources and even demonstrated them to the Nigerian Air Force chief of staff. Known for being able to “make drones with local materials” and other novel technologies, he has received broad support for these life-saving projects. Dr. Mohammed’s work exemplifies how innovative teaching and research can directly translate into real-world impact, and he continues to mentor his students and colleagues in the mindset that no challenge is insurmountable with creativity and collaboration.
