Dr. Amir Abdullahi Bature

Bayero University Kano

Fall 2019

Dr. Amir Abdullahi Bature is a senior lecturer at Bayero University Kano (BUK) and was a Fall 2019 MIT-ETT fellow. He returned from MIT with a new mindset for teaching engineering: he believes every course needs clear objectives and continuous assessment so that students not only excel in exams but also acquire industry-relevant skills. Dr. Bature restructured his classes to include weekly labs and projects, enabling students to apply theoretical concepts in practice. This approach has led to notable student innovations, such as a project where his students added smart maintenance trackers and GPS navigation to Nigeria’s ubiquitous keke (auto-rickshaw) vehicles. He credits the ETT program’s “everything is possible” ethos with instilling in him and his peers a determination to tackle real-world problems. Dr. Bature’s own research spans computer programming applications and engineering education methods, and he actively mentors his students to become creative, solution-driven engineers.
