Dr. Ernest Mwebaze

Dr. Ernest Mwebaze is the Executive Director of Sunbird AI, a non-profit focused on building practical AI systems for social impact in Africa. A Fall 2014 MIT-ETT Fellow (from Makerere University), he is a globally recognized leader in Applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Previously, he served as a Research Scientist at the Google AI Research Lab in Accra, Ghana, and led the AI and Data Science research group at Makerere University. His work focuses on using computer vision and deep learning to solve critical challenges in agriculture (such as automated crop disease diagnosis) and healthcare. Dr. Mwebaze has also worked with the UN Global Pulse Lab in Kampala to develop data-driven solutions for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science (Machine Learning) from the University of Groningen, Netherlands.
