Dr. Joseph Oyetola Oyekale

Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun

Fall 2022

Dr. Joseph Oyetola Oyekale is an Associate Professor at the New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering (NMITE) in the United Kingdom. A Fall 2022 MIT-ETT Fellow (originally from the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun), he is a specialist in Thermo-Fluids, Renewable Energy Systems, and Engineering Education. His career trajectory is marked by significant international mobility, having held research positions in Italy, Germany, Nigeria, and now the UK. His technical research focuses on the optimization of Organic Rankine Cycles (ORC) for power generation. He investigates “Hybrid Solar-Biomass” systems, designing power plants that can switch between solar energy and biomass (agricultural waste) to ensure consistent electricity supply in off-grid communities. His work on Exergo-economic Analysis helps determine the cost-effectiveness of these hybrid systems, balancing thermodynamic efficiency with financial viability. Dr. Oyekale holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Cagliari, Italy, with the prestigious “Doctor Europaeus” distinction due to his extensive collaborative research at the University of Bayreuth, Germany. Since his fellowship at MIT, Dr. Oyekale has become a strong advocate for Problem-Based Learning (PBL). At NMITE, an institution known for its radical “textbook-free” and hands-on approach to engineering, he applies the pedagogical strategies he observed at MIT to train engineers who are “work-ready” from day one. He continues to mentor Nigerian students and collaborates with his former colleagues at FUPRE on waste-to-energy projects
