Bayero University, Kano

Fall 2018

Dr. Mubarak D. Muhammad is a senior lecturer in mechanical engineering at Bayero University Kano (BUK). A Fall 2018 MIT-ETT fellow, he returned from MIT with a transformed approach to teaching: he now structures his courses to include weekly hands-on labs and design projects, ensuring students can apply theory in practice. This shift has already inspired student innovations, such as a project to retrofit Nigeria’s keke (auto rickshaw) with smart tracking and navigation systems. Dr. Muhammad has also been a key figure in collaborative research efforts; during the COVID-19 crisis, he and colleagues at BUK developed a custom control algorithm for an open-source emergency ventilator, significantly contributing to local pandemic response. His research interests include control systems and renewable energy technologies, and he mentors students to become creative problem-solvers who can bridge theory with real-world engineering challenges.
