Dr. Nuka Nwiabu

Rivers State University

Fall 2013

Dr. Nuka Nwiabu is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at Rivers State University (RSU), Port Harcourt. A Fall 2013 MIT-ETT Fellow, he is a researcher in Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence, with a specific focus on Situation Awareness and Decision Support Systems. His research is deeply rooted in the industrial realities of the Niger Delta. He specializes in developing “Intelligent Surveillance Systems” for the oil and gas industry, utilizing Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models to detect pipeline vandalism and monitor critical infrastructure. His work on “Pipeline Contextual Information” aims to differentiate between benign activities (like farming) and actual threats (like excavation), reducing false alarms in security systems. Dr. Nwiabu holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Robert Gordon University, UK. His doctoral research on “Situation-Aware Disaster Management” laid the foundation for his current work on violence prevention and safety monitoring on university campuses. Following his fellowship at MIT, Dr. Nwiabu has been an advocate for integrating industry-standard software practices into the RSU curriculum. He focuses on teaching students Object-Oriented Analysis and Design (OOAD) not just as a theory, but as a practical tool for building scalable software solutions. He is also active in researching Knowledge Graphs for e-Government, helping public institutions manage complex data to improve service delivery.
