Fall 2013
Prof. Jackson Akpojaro is a Professor of Computer Science and Machine Learning at the University of Africa, Toru-Orua (UAT), where he also serves as the Director of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance. A Fall 2013 MIT-ETT Fellow (sponsored by Total/NNPC), he is a recognized expert in Network Security, Machine Learning, and Data Mining. His research focuses on the application of “Unsupervised Learning” algorithms to detect malware in wireless devices. He has developed novel techniques for identifying malicious applications on Android smartphones by analyzing their behavioral patterns rather than just their code signatures. Additionally, he works on e-Agriculture frameworks, using data mining to predict crop yields and optimize resource allocation for Nigerian farmers. Prof. Akpojaro holds a Ph.D. in Electronic Systems Engineering from the University of Essex, UK. His time at MIT as a Post-Doctoral Scholar was pivotal in shaping his approach to “Problem-Based Learning.” Upon returning to Nigeria, he authored a widely used textbook on Networks and IPs and has supervised over 65 Master’s degree projects, enforcing a curriculum that blends theoretical computer science with practical industry certifications. Before joining UAT, he held leadership positions at Western Delta University and Samuel Adegboyega University. He is a strong advocate for the use of “Big Data” in governance and has published extensively on using IT risk management to reduce disproportionate expenditures in Nigerian public institutions.
