Prof. Jonathan Gana Kolo
Federal University of Technology, Minna
Spring 2014
Prof. Jonathan Gana Kolo is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMinna). A Spring 2014 MIT-ETT Fellow, he is a leading expert in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and Digital Signal Processing. He has served in significant leadership roles, including as the Head of the Department of Computer Engineering (2014–2019), where he was instrumental in modernizing the engineering curriculum. His research focuses on Energy-Efficient Computing and the development of adaptive data compression algorithms for wireless sensor nodes. He specializes in designing embedded systems for real-time monitoring applications, such as anti-theft pipeline vandalism detection systems and smart agricultural feed dispensers. His work aims to solve Nigeria’s infrastructure challenges by creating low-power, high-reliability remote sensing networks. Prof. Kolo holds a Ph.D. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Nottingham (Malaysia Campus). Following his fellowship at MIT, he became a vocal advocate for “Problem-Based Learning” (PBL) at FUTMinna, moving away from rote memorization to a teaching style that challenges students to build functional prototypes. He frequently organizes seminars to train younger faculty on these pedagogical methods. He is a registered engineer with COREN and an active member of the IEEE. Beyond his technical research, Prof. Kolo is deeply committed to student mentorship, serving as a patron for various student engineering bodies and supervising numerous postgraduate researchers who are now making their mark in the telecommunications industry.
