Prof. Murtala Zungeru Adamu

University of Botswana

Spring 2014

Prof. Adamu Murtala Zungeru is a Full Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Botswana. A Spring 2014 MIT-ETT Fellow (originally from the Federal University of Technology, Minna), he has established himself as a global authority in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and Swarm Intelligence. He previously served as the Head of the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Telecommunications Engineering at the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST). His research is renowned for the invention of the “Termite-Hill Routing Algorithm” for wireless sensor networks, a breakthrough in bio-inspired computing that optimizes data transfer in resource-constrained environments. He also holds multiple international patents, including a novel method for automated diamond sorting using dual-energy X-ray transmission—a critical innovation for the mining industry in Southern Africa. Prof. Zungeru holds a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Nottingham, UK. His time at MIT was instrumental in shaping his pedagogical approach; he is a certified expert in “Interactive Teaching” and has mentored over 20 PhD and Master’s students across Africa. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and a registered engineer with COREN (Nigeria) and ERB (Botswana). Beyond his academic research, Prof. Zungeru is a prolific inventor and author, having published over 90 peer-reviewed papers and 5 books on wireless communications and embedded systems. He serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Access and actively facilitates international research collaborations between Nigerian and Southern African universities.
