Prof. Olumide Olayinka Obe
Federal University of Technology Akure
Spring 2013
Prof. Olumide Olayinka Obe is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA). A Spring 2013 MIT-ETT Fellow, he is a leading expert in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision, and Soft Computing. His work is particularly noted for its focus on “Assistive Technologies,” designing intelligent systems that improve the quality of life for people with disabilities. His research specializes in developing Android-based Visual Product Identification systems for the visually impaired. Using advanced algorithms like SIFT (Scale-Invariant Feature Transform) and FAST (Features from Accelerated Segment Test), he creates mobile applications that can “see” objects and narrate them to blind users. He also researches Affective Computing, exploring how computers can recognize and simulate human emotions to create more natural user interfaces. Prof. Obe holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Politehnica University of Bucharest, Romania, giving him a unique academic lineage that blends Eastern European mathematical rigor with American pedagogical innovation. His time at MIT was instrumental in refining his approach to “Student-Centered Learning”; he is a strong proponent of using open-source tools and project-based assessments to demystify complex AI concepts for undergraduates. He is the recipient of the Best Researcher Award (Computer Vision) and continues to lead the Artificial Intelligence and Soft Computing Group at FUTA. His recent work includes the development of iris and voice recognition models for securing Computer-Based Tests (CBT) in Nigerian universities, addressing the critical challenge of exam malpractice.
